Open Letter is pleased to announce its second exhibition Yui Horiuchi’s solo show “FROM BEHIND ~For Her.~.”

Yui Horiuchi is a Tokyo based artist whose works cover wide range of mediums from painting, illustration to embroidery. Since acquiring her B.F.A degree in Oil Painting from Tama Art University, Tokyo in 2011, she has been developing her multiple art practice. Her works, regardless of medium, tend to be inspired by incomparable beauty and rich colors found in nature. For her embroidery works, she stitches her designs on found fabrics like used tablecloths and cotton bags not only to play with narratives and memories of the materials but also to make her artworks portable and wearable.

In this exhibition “FROM BEHIND ~For Her.~,” we will show Horiuchi’s new watercolor works that she had been working on in the past year.

Horiuchi started watercolor painting of the girls from behind in the nature after she and her female friend visited some old cemetery in the woods in London. Horiuchi recalls she was walking behind and taking pictures of the friends, and the scene in which a girl walking around the abandoned place surrounded with woods, was so impressive to her. After that, Horiuchi started her “FROM BEHIND” work series by combining the images of girls she collected from internet and the images of nature she took pictures of around her place and some parks.

In “FROM BEHIND” series, there is a feeling of surreal, daydreamly and loneliness. Also, the artist’s gaze at the subject to paint, the sense of distance between the artists and the subject. It seems this artist’s gaze and the sense of distance create the world view of the “FROM BEHIND” series.

Although many different kinds of girls and ladies are painted in the different situations, in “FROM BEHIND” series, there is always the same “she.” After a certain incident, it became very personal and irreplaceable for Horiuchi to make “FROM BEHIND” series.

While I was drawing girls from behind, 
I was told that my friend had just passed away.
Through my recollection about her, 
I started to realize that she was in my drawings all the time.
I thought it was magical.
Once I parted from painting, but I have picked up my brush again.
I believe that was also magical.
I am now filled with passion for creating works.
She came back to tell me that.
I am going to continue drawing for her.

Keeping gaze to a subject is keeping relationship with the subject. Seeing Horiuchi’s works and feeling her gaze to “her.” Imaging her saying “it was magical,” and gazing at your “her.” Through this exhibition, we would like you to experience those feelings.

Open Letter では、第2回目の企画展示として、堀内結 個展『FROM BEHIND ~For Her.~』を開催いたします。

堀内結さんは、東京を拠点に活動するアーティストです。2011年に多摩美術大学の油絵専攻を卒業したのち、多様な作家活動を展開してきました。絵画、イラストの他、刺繍を使った作品も手がけています。

彼女の作品は、自然に存在する美や豊かな色彩に主題を得ることが多く、また刺繍作品に関しては、使い古されたテーブルクロスやエコバッグなどのファウンド・オブジェクトにデザインを施してきました。それによって、彼女は物そのものに内在する記憶や物語と戯れるだけではなく、作品を身につけたり、持ち運びできるものへの変容を試みてきました。

本展『FROM BEHIND ~For Her.~』では、堀内さんがこの１年間取り組んできた女性の後ろ姿（From behind）を描いた水彩画の新作を展示いたします。

堀内さんが、自然の中にいる女性の後ろ姿を描くようになったきっかけは、女性の友人とロンドンにある、森のような古い墓地を訪れたときでした。そこを歩く友人の後ろ姿を写真に収めながら、うっそうとした緑の中の、その見捨てられた空間に人が歩いている、その光景がとても印象的だったと言います。 そこから、インターネットで見つけた女性の後ろ姿の画像や、近所の緑道や公園で撮った植物の写真を組み合わせたシリーズ『FROM BEHIND』を描き始めます。

どこか現実離れした白昼夢のような作風は、彷徨うような孤独を淡々と描いているように見えます。そこには、描く対象をそっと背後から見つめる、変わらないまなざしと距離感があります。この堀内さんと描かれる女性の関係性とでもいうべき距離感が、『FROM BEHIND』シリーズの世界観をつくり上げているように思えます。

『FROM BEHIND』シリーズには、様々な容姿の女性、場所が登場していますが、そこには同じひとりの「彼女」が存在しています。ある出来事をきっかけに、『FROM BEHIND』シリーズを描くことは、堀内さんにとってきわめてパーソナルな、そしてかけがえのない行為となります。

後ろ姿の女性ばかりを描いている時
私の元にもう会えない友人がいるという知らせが入った
彼女と過ごした時間を辿るうち
作品の女性達が彼女の姿を投影しているかのように見えた
彼女が去っても彼女が見える
魔法のような感覚だった
一度絵から離れた私が絵を再開したことも魔法のようなものだ
今は自然と描きたい気持ちがあふれている
彼女はそのことを伝えるためにやってきた
その彼女を私は絵でつづりたい

まなざしを保つことは、対象との関係性を保つことだと思います。 作品を通して、堀内さんの「彼女」へのまなざしを感じること。 「魔法のような感覚」を想像すること。そして、自分にとっての「彼女」を見つめること。 本展を通して、みなさんにそうした感覚を体験いただければ幸いです。

Originally, the term F-word always goes with a negative implication. 

But what if foreigners, who would not be familiar with English culture, try to understand this word? May it be possible for them to simply consider it as "the word that starts with F"? 

Based on these thoughts, this body of work was born when I started to collect and spell positive "F-word"s. 

The fact that one is incapable of using foreign language perfectly,

The term "F-word" itself,

This work is a practical attempt to focus on creative possibilities that come out from redefinition of these things originally regarded as negative as something positive.

本来、絶対的にネガティブな意味が付きまとう、F-wordという言葉。

しかし、英語文化に通じてはいない、外国人がそれを理解するとしたら、単に「頭にFのつく言葉」と捉えることもできるのでは？

そんな発想から、ポジティブな”F-word”を綴り出してみたのがこの作品のキッカケです。

外国語を完璧に扱えないということ。

そして”F-word”という言葉そのもの。

この作品は、本来はネガティヴなそれらを肯定的に捉え直すことにより、生まれる創造性にフォーカスを当てる、実践的な試みです。

Yui Horiuchi showcases a collection of embroidery works based on the motif of ‘Yugama’, a lake situated beside the crater of Mount Shirane in Kusatsu, Gunma prefecture.

While Mount Shirane can be fierce as an active volcano, the presence of Yugama has served as a point of healing since old times, with one of the best hot springs in Japan.

Here Horiuchi attempts to depict on canvas the profound emotion evoked when encountering the lake’s landscape of emerald green, as quiet as the moon, spread out before one after climbing to the white barren summit of the mountain.

堀内結は、大学在籍中より世界各地を旅し、訪れた先々での出来事から派生した感情から自然が持つフォルムまで様々なモチーフを刺繍という手法を用いて制作してきました。堀内が今回モチーフに選んだのは、群馬にある草津白根山の火口縁から覗く湯釜（火口湖）。自転車競技に使われるサコッシュというストラップの長いトートバックにヒントを得て、バックそのものもキャンバスとして一から制作している白根山の湯釜がたたえる幽玄さは噴火に伴い死傷者さえ出し、一部規制されている一方、火山の存在は古来より人々を癒してきました。日本有数の酸性度と、日本一といわれる温泉湧出量を誇る草津温泉がその恩恵です。草木をほとんど寄せ付けない白く荒れた白根山の山頂部に登りつめ、月世界のような静かなエメラルドグリーンの火口湖・湯釜が目の前に広がった時の情動をキャンバス上に留めようと試みています。
